“We’re tweens now,” Elliot and Finn told me yesterday. Everything in this mama’s heart crashed to a sudden and desperate stop. It was literally yesterday that I was googling “I’m Pregnant with Twins” and now my 4 and 5-pound babies are trying to tell me their tweens? Nah, son.
“Hard no, child. You are turning eight, not eleven or twelve, ” I popped back. With all the logic and reason of twins born to two lawyers, they started laying out their evidence, the primary piece being that our gym’s “tween” programming is for 8-12 year olds.
I’ll never forget laying on the ultrasound table and the tech casually mentioning, “There’s more than one baby.” Poor thing thought we already knew, and WE. DID. NOT. She had her hands full while Sean started mumbling about paying for college and I started wondering how to convince my mom to move in with us. You can read the whole story of finding out we were having twins here.
Surviving newborn twins is no joke, but it was also full of adoration and wonder. We adored how cute they were and the way they gravitated to each other even as tiny infants. And we wondered how it was possible for 10 month old twins to actively engage in baby wrestling when they were only just starting to walk.
Parenting twins has many different stages, difficulties, and joys, like parenting any other kid. Some of the things we are enjoying about the allegedly “tween” baby dudes is:
In our year of transitions, these two (and their brother and sister) have made friends with everyone around us, including the other men and women who are living in the hotel for the same work assignment that we are here for. Most of our kids best friends this year are the age of their parents and grandparents! We are so grateful for a community away from home that has surrounded our family and loved us all the way through. Last night the way they loved us well was by throwing an impromptu birthday party for our boys on the weekly “Grilling with the Feds” cookout we have here at our hotel. Elliot and Finn loved sharing their birthday celebration with their hotel buddies and are now knee deep in the Legoes and Chess/Checkers/Backgammon set their hotel fam gave them! A special thanks to Team America for making our boys feels so loved.
Happy 8th birthday to the baby dudes!
